Hello there, and welcome to The In-Between Substack newsletter!
What is a Substack? Basically, it’s a blogging and newsletter platform where writers and other creatives can publish their work directly to their readers. There are many very good ones out there, and the platform is worth exploring. This Substack is mine! :)
My name is Sarah, and I’m a longtime US immigrant to Mexico, translator, writer, and sociologist. You might know me already from my column at Mexico News Daily!
I like to write about lots of things besides Mexico, too. Here are the sections you might want to explore:
Can’t we have BOTH? (bilingual content): I just can’t quit my translating ways (even as AI sucks up most of the work). I also can’t resist a good story, and you know something? Every person really is a universe.
In this section, I talk to people in Mexico, one at a time, and ask them a question. I record their answers by video or audio, snap a picture, and then transcribe and translate what they said.
On Wednesdays I post the picture and a bilingual excerpt, like this. On Fridays, I send the entire video or audio recording plus the entire bilingual transcript to paid subscribers. This is great practice if you’re trying to get a handle on the language by hearing how people actually talk in regular conversation!Fiction: The short story is the perfect format, if you ask me. It doesn’t take too long to read, and you get the satisfaction of conclusion pretty quickly. Slightly creepy magical realism is turning out to be my favorite style, though I love a good subversive reinterpretation of a familiar story, too! Stories come out (occasionally, if I haven’t written an essay instead) on Sundays.
Poetry: Once in a while, I’ll write a Sunday poem instead, and I’m kind shy about them. Not all of the ones I’ve written are here, because they can be kind of embarrassing. I’ll put more up as I get more courageous!
On Mexico: Many posts, but not all, are republished articles (like this one!) from Mexico News Daily, including lots of fun memes in Spanish with their translations which you should definitely check out if you need a laugh.
Essays and Reflections: This is where I write pretty much whatever I feel like writing. Sometimes it’s deeply personal, sometimes it’s angry, sometimes it’s an earnest but failed call to arms for getting humanity to get it together, already. And sometimes it’s an extended rant about soul-sucking capitalism and its clueless handmaiden, AI. I even wrote a tribute to Richard Simmons! Truly, it’s all there.
So again, welcome. I am honored that you’re here. Feel free to send me a message through the chat feature, or leave a comment on a post, or directly to my email (you can simply hit “reply” when you get a newsletter). I read every response!
If you’ve signed up and aren’t getting the newsletters, check your spam folder. (Wednesdays and Sundays are the free content days; Fridays are when paid subscribers receive exclusive content).
And if you know someone else who might enjoy reading The In-Between, please do share the publication with them! <3
Hi Sarah,
I read your article about starting a business in Mexico. I'm interested in the water catchment systems. What a great idea! Are there business opportunities for this? I will soon be living in Mexico part-time. Thank you, Kevin W.
