Great article. So amazing that Mexico will have a woman president before the USA. Hard to believe it’s really going to happen after spending years in a Mexican company seeing how women are treated here.
Interesting. Hopefully this will change, and women will get more respect. At least these two women are respected enough to get nominated to run for Presidente. It's a great start, and puts the USA to shame.
Thanks for the analysis. Maybe the only reason why the right-wing party (PAN) has stopped (for now) their misogynistic attacks is because they have a female candidate themselves: they would shoot themselves in the foot. In the past their leaders have referred to women as “viejerío” (an insulting way to call women) or two-legged washing machines. Sheinbaum was not attacked for being a woman, but she was a victim of xenophobic comments by expresident Fox who called her “Bulgarian Jewish”. He also called Ebrard “French stuck-up”, Noroña “extraterrestrial” and Augusto López “Transylvanian”.
IMO, "Presidente" is presidente. "Words like actress" and "stewardess" are no longer used. An actor is an actor. Stewardess is now "flight attendant". Don't know if it is the same in Mexico; nouns are either masculine or feminine. In this case, however, it could be a good way to indicate that Mexico is progressive enough to elect a woman without actually saying "female president". "Presidenta" does't sound as strong, though, IMHO.
I was talking to a friend about this, who said she was ultimately convinced when someone said "Well, but we DO say "sirviente" and "sirvienta", which is true. I'll see what the consensus is! It's not my biggest concern, though there have been some kind if silly adjustments to the language when it comes to gender that I'm slightly wary of (which as a whole thing is pretty low on the list of things that get me worked up, so meh).
I voted for Hillary over Obama in the primary, because I didn't think he had anywhere near her experience in government. I m still suffering from the 2016 election, and hoped that when Trump won, I would never have to look at or hear him again. We still have had four years of his complaining and whining anyway! I'm very afraid of what wll happen to our country if he wins again.( Elizabeth Warren would have been a great candidate, I think.) By the way, I think I'm not allowed to make political comments on Mexicans, right? I am happy for Mexico that they will have a woman president. Isi it permitted to say that I hope that the one who is not a puppet of AMLO will win, but it doesn't look like it? Am I in trouble now?
Nobody said anyone hated half the country. There are people that I really, really, don't like, but that doesn't mean I don't like all the people that like that person.
He IS! Will he suffer any consequences, though, is the big question...and I think we all know he'll still get to be president. :( I'm pretty convinced that he sold his soul to the devil or something in exchange for being, basically, bullet-proof.
Everyone is allowed to have opinions about anything they want! What's prohibited is any kind of political activism by foreigners, so as long as you're not showing up at protests and throwing molotov cocktails and the like, you're okay. :D
Xochitl Gálvez is the opposition candidate, and I'm sure she'd be fine...though I've been taken aback by her insistence that we need to fill the country with more and bigger prisons to put all these criminals in, as if prisons here were places people actually got justice...yikes. The good thing is that no one in the running is politically CRAZY, which is more than I can say for my country of citizenship. I even really ended up liking Maynez, the soul dude who I thought I wouldn't like at all.
But it's not all roses...I just read today that another municipal candidate was shot dead before his last campaign speech. :(
you would thin he would be embarassed. News said he will appeal. To his followers it will look like he's a martyr. What I understand is the the jury members have to be approved by prosecution and defendant lawyers. He said he didn't get a fair trial. Can't wait for the debate between him and Biden, hope he doesn't stalk Biden like he did Hillary, so rude! In other news Mexicans will vote tomorrow.
Living in Los Angeles it seems to me that the two countries are merging. All my neighbors were born in Mexico or Central America. I attend a Spanish speaking church congregation and watch telenovelas. However the decisions of the Mexican government usually does not get a lot of people in other countries killed.
People who knew Hillary’s unsavory past weren’t despising her because it was cool, they knew what a crook she was. They don’t call her Killary for no reason. Too many in-laws in Arkansas with too many connections to gloss over the glaring.Still, she would have done a better job than Obama or Obama 2.0. Mexico has a token woman President now . Expect AMLO 2.0
I mentioned a possible Sheinbaum presidency to a Mexican friend, a physician and a well-informed liberal. His opinion is that Méxicans will accept Sheinbaum because they know that a man, AMLO, will be at her side to correct any mis-steps that she, as a woman, might make. The couple Mexicans I've asked about it concur. What do you think?
me too in Mexico, my Mexican friends will vote but don't have their hopes up that she will make a difference, Here in the states there has to be cooperation on both sides at the border. iI'' gotten out of hand.

Oh no! I only see her ads. I like what she says.
Do you mean we have to choose between the "lesser of two evil"parties? When women are leaders of all countries, there will be no more wars, I am sure.

hey, Trump is in serious trouble, see today's headlines.
I watched it live on youtube. I was delighted!
A small victory. His followers don't care, but I sure do like that he knows he's a LOSER!

lol oh MAN I remember that stalking, SO weird and creepy.
Hopefully everything goes well Sunday. :)
Way off subject here but when you wrote "let me count the ways" it reminded me of a favorite author and book. Let Me Count the Ways by Peter De Vries.
Oh! Well he's got a great name, so I'd better check him out :D

Isn't it strange how there are pockets of the country that you would never guess existed based on all the crazy rhetoric?
Geez John, that was a really rude comment. "Return to my safe space and cry"?
I am part of "the left" and I don't hate half the country for not thinking the same way I do. Sheesh.
Let’s hope Kamela will make all those nightmares disappear. I hope you still have the pantsuit
